Gold Medalist (Robot Gathering) at 1st Bangladesh Robot Olympiad - 2018
Bangladesh Robot Olympiad started its journey on 2018 with the motive to curate talents from all over 64 districts of Bangladesh. The competition was held at the Curzon Hall of University of Dhaka on 26 October, 2018. There were four different category of competitions: Creative Category, Robot in Movie, Robot Gathering (Line Follower Robot) and Robotic Quiz, and was held among two separate level of students: Junior (aged between 10 and 15) and Senior (aged between 16 and 18). Md. Shahriar Hasan paritipated in Robot Gathering (Line Follower Robot) competition where he built an autonomous line follower robot to complete the track at lowest possible time. The design featured a 13-sensor TCRT5000 array for precise detection of black-and-white line paths, enabling robust navigation across complex tracks. A PID control algorithm was implemented to ensure smooth and responsive motor control, optimizing both speed and accuracy. The modular codebase, including sensor calibration, motor control, and PID tuning, is available on GitHub.
His engineered robot completed the whole track within 1 min 35 seconds and was awarded Gold Medal at the competition. Check out the official page of BDRO for the result of 2018 competition here.
Winner (Energy Efficiency) at Power and Energy Hackathon - 2018
Emerging economies with low energy consumption are gradually embracing the global energy revolution. Hackathons play a vital role in this shift, serving as platforms where people from diverse technical and functional backgrounds come together to build innovative solutions—ranging from apps and websites to hardware devices and robots. To accelerate this movement, the Ministry of Power, Energy & Mineral Resources organized a national hackathon, bringing together students, professionals, entrepreneurs, and energy experts. For 36 continuous hours on September 6–8, 2018, nearly 900 participants collaborated to unlock ideas, explore smart energy opportunities, and develop entrepreneurial solutions for Bangladesh’s energy future.
Among them, Md. Shahriar Hasan of Dhaka College outshone 90 competing teams to win the Championship in the Energy Efficiency Category. His pioneering solution used artificial intelligence to predict machine failures in advance—a breakthrough approach powered by NASA’s Jet Propulsion dataset. By training a neural network with 50,000 parameters, he achieved a 76.08% prediction accuracy, demonstrating how cutting-edge AI can revolutionize industrial efficiency. This bold idea and execution not only secured his victory but also positioned him as a frontrunner in applying AI to real-world energy challenges. Check out the official post from Dhaka College, where Shahriar is receiving a honorarium from the Principal of Dhaka College, Prof. Muazzem Hossain.
